Lidl UK, the British branch of the German supermarket giant Lidl, has announced another pay rise for its employees. This marks the third increase in wages for Lidl staff within the past year.
Starting in June, Lidl workers across Britain will see their hourly rate jump from £12.00 to £12.40. Staff based in London will receive an even higher increase, with their hourly pay rising from £13.55 to £13.65.
Lidl's commitment to competitive wages comes amidst rising inflation concerns in the UK. The Bank of England is closely monitoring wage growth, as it can contribute to inflationary pressures. This news follows similar moves by other major retailers, such as John Lewis and Co-op, who announced 10% pay rises in March following the government's increase of the national living wage.
With over 32,000 employees across Britain, Lidl is a significant player in the UK retail sector. This latest pay rise strengthens their position as an employer offering "industry-leading pay," as stated by Lidl, which is part of Germany's Schwarz retail group and holds an 8% share of the British supermarket market.
This news is likely to be welcomed by Lidl staff and may put pressure on other retailers to follow suit in offering competitive wages to attract and retain talent.
