German Companies Embrace Remote Work: Only 4% Plan to Eliminate It Completely, Ifo Survey Reveals

A new Ifo survey shows that 96% of German companies want to keep or even expand remote work, with only 4% planning to eliminate it entirely.

In a significant shift towards modern work practices, a recent survey conducted by the Ifo Institute reveals that an overwhelming majority of German companies intend to continue offering remote work options. According to the survey, only 4% of companies where remote work is possible plan to eliminate it entirely, while the rest are eager to maintain or even expand this mode of working.

Remote Work is Here to Stay

The Ifo survey highlights that 79% of German companies have the capability to offer remote work. Among these companies, 75% are committed to preserving the flexibility that remote work provides. This trend is particularly strong among large companies, where 93% have implemented remote work, compared to 75% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The survey dispels the notion that there is a widespread return to traditional office settings, a sentiment echoed by Ifo researchers who stated, “These findings refute the idea that the trend is moving back to office-based work.”

Flexibility Over Strict Rules

Interestingly, while some companies are considering stricter rules for remote work, they are in the minority. Only 12% of companies indicated plans to introduce more stringent guidelines, whereas 11% expressed a desire to make work schedules even more flexible. This indicates a broader trend towards accommodating diverse work preferences and enhancing work-life balance for employees.

Industry-Specific Insights

The survey also sheds light on how different industries in Germany are adapting to remote work. In the service sector, 82% of companies offer remote work options, while in manufacturing, the figure is even higher at 89%. In contrast, the construction and commercial sectors lag behind, with only 40% of companies providing remote work opportunities.

Despite these disparities, there is a clear consensus across all sectors: the majority of companies do not intend to restrict or eliminate remote work. This suggests that remote work is becoming a firmly established practice in Germany, regardless of the industry.

The Future of Remote Work in Germany

Ifo experts believe that remote work is not just a temporary trend but a permanent fixture in the German business landscape. “No one denies that working on-site in the office can be better than working from home in certain respects. Stricter rules, through better coordination of common working hours on-site, can make remote work more productive overall,” they explain. However, they also emphasize, “Remote work is and will remain firmly established in Germany. In this respect, we will not return to 2019.”

As German companies continue to navigate the evolving work environment, it’s clear that remote work will play a significant role in shaping the future of business operations. With flexibility and employee well-being at the forefront, Germany is setting a strong example for modern work practices in Europe.
