A state of emergency has been declared in Messara, on the Greek island of Crete, as the region grapples with a severe water shortage. The Faneromeni Dam, the primary water source for the area, has seen its levels drop drastically due to illegal water pumping, low rainfall, and high temperatures.
Critical Water Levels and Impact
The Faneromeni Dam, a crucial lifeline for water and irrigation, has reached alarmingly low levels. This crisis was exacerbated by illegal water pumping, resulting in a loss of 3 million cubic meters of water. Combined with unusually low rainfall and intense heat, the situation has become dire for the residents and farmers of Messara.
Farmers in Desperation
Farmers in Messara are facing peak irrigation needs amidst the water crisis. One resident highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “There’s a big problem. The heat is relentless and we don’t know if we’ll have a winter. The situation with irrigation is critical and soon the water supply will be affected too.”
Another resident emphasized the need for better water management, “We see a big waste of water in homes and on the streets. Measures and laws must be respected to secure our future.”
Emergency Measures and Funding
In response to the crisis, the municipality of Phaistos has implemented emergency measures, including crop irrigation restrictions. However, farmers argue that these restrictions are insufficient. An olive grower expressed frustration, “One hundred cubic meters per acre is nothing. We’re just fooling ourselves that we have water.”
The state of emergency allows Phaistos to access immediate funding for essential projects, such as drilling new wells and building reservoirs. Phaistos mayor, Gregory Nikolidakis, confirmed they have secured €180,000, although the funds have not yet been received. The municipality is also in discussions with the Ministry of Interior for additional assistance.
Looking Ahead
As the region waits for funding and further assistance, the situation remains critical. The residents and officials of Messara are working tirelessly to implement measures to address the water shortage and ensure the future stability of their water supply.
