China's not the only place experiencing overcrowding on its mountains! This week, climbers on Yandang Mountain in eastern China found themselves stuck halfway up a cliff for over an hour.
The cause? Too many people on a single fixed climbing route, called a via ferrata (metal rungs secured to the mountain).Images of climbers clinging to ropes went viral on Chinese social media.
"This is frightening! Someone like me afraid of heights might just wet myself up there!" wrote one commenter.
Safety concerns were raised, but thankfully everyone was wearing helmets, harnesses, and safety gear.
The company managing the via ferrata, Wenzhou Dingcheng Sports Development Co., Ltd, admitted fault. They underestimated the number of visitors and lacked a proper ticketing and crowd control system.
"We will be rolling out a traffic-control system for visitors in the future," the company said in a statement. Ticket sales are currently halted.
Yandang Mountain, located 410 kilometers south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province, is a popular tourist destination, especially during China's Labor Day holiday (first week of May). It's 1,150 meters high and was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001.
