Amazon brings quantum computing to the EU with Finnish startup IQM

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has partnered with Finnish quantum computing company IQM to offer the first-ever quantum computing service in the European Union. This is a significant development for both companies and the European tech scene as a whole.

Here's what you need to know:

  • IQM Garnet on AWS: Researchers and developers in the EU can now access IQM's 20-qubit quantum processing unit (QPU) called Garnet through the AWS cloud platform. This is the first time AWS offers a quantum processor specifically located within the EU (Stockholm region).

  • Benefits for all: This collaboration allows:

  • EU researchers and businesses: to experiment with novel quantum algorithms and applications directly through the cloud, with pay-as-you-go pricing.

  • IQM: to scale their offerings globally and collaborate with a wider range of users.

  • The tech industry: to take a major step forward in cloud-based quantum computing.

Beyond the hype: Quantum readiness

While current quantum computers are still under development, there's a growing need for businesses to prepare for their future potential. This partnership between AWS and IQM provides a platform for:

  • Quantum algorithm development: Smaller qubit systems like Garnet serve as training grounds for software developers working on algorithms and error correction methods.

  • Building a quantum-ready workforce: Organizations can use these cloud-based services to get their teams familiar with quantum computing before its wider adoption.

IQM's vision for the future

  • Affordable access: IQM offers their quantum computers at competitive rates, particularly beneficial for startups in the burgeoning quantum software space.

  • Scaling up:  IQM plans to add a more powerful 54-qubit quantum computer (IQM Radiance) to their cloud offerings by early 2025. This will allow users to tackle problems beyond the capabilities of classical supercomputers.

  • Real-world applications: By 2026, IQM expects to see the first commercially viable quantum algorithms in areas like finance, automotive, life sciences, and chemicals.

This partnership between Amazon and IQM is a promising step towards a future where quantum computing becomes a readily available tool for scientific discovery and technological innovation.

Short Description: Amazon Web Services (AWS) partners with IQM to offer the first quantum computing service in the EU. Researchers can now access IQM's 20-qubit quantum processor (QPU) through the AWS cloud, enabling the development of novel quantum algorithms and applications. This marks a major step forward in cloud-based quantum computing for Europe.
